A few months ago I had the pleasure of visiting my darling friend in Chicago, who is also a wedding photographer. I LOVE discussing the intricacies of wedding photography with fellow photographers, especially digging into the nitty-gritty; the issues that lie just far enough beneath the surface to stay off the radar. Grooming products are such a topic!
I often joke that wedding photography is my favorite work out. With cameras slung around my neck, a cross-body satchel, and instantaneous dropping to the ground to capture the perfect shot, you might say my job is physically demanding! The day after a wedding I feel like Rocky probably felt after fighting Apollo Creed - sore, exhausted and elated! Add to those conditions 100 degree weather and you become prey to some major grooming issues.
This advice really applies to everyone. Men and women, photographers, brides, everyone. From left to right I am sharing some of my favorite Power Players.
1) Schwarzkopf got2b POWDER'ful. The spelling kills me, but get past it because this is the most versatile grooming product on the market. I should just refer to this product as "The Maverick." This power powder does not conform to generally accepted customs, re-writing the rules of your routine. When you think of "powder" you probably conjure up images of chalk-like thick baby powder. Wipe that image away and prepare to be humbled. This powder has odorless, micro fine particles that absorb moisture. I use this for everything. I mix it with Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine (4) and apply it to damp hair for light control. If you have a wimpy hair product that wish had a little more grit, a little more hold, adding this powder is your answer. In a time of quiet desperation I discovered that this product is also a perfect dry shampoo. Since it is colorless, it works for the full spectrum of hair colors and it leaves no weird chalky color like baby powder. Another amazing application of this product is as a skin primer and oil absorber. Try some on the palm of your hand. It zaps moisture and leaves your skin looking like porcelain. When you sweat profusely on your face sprinkle this onto the affected areas. You will go from a hot mess to precious porcelain. The real kicker? This costs about $5. At that price you can't afford not to buy it.
2) In the summer heat I prefer scented body lotion to perfume. Perfume is primarily alcohol, which evaporates quickly in high temperatures and can distort into a wonky scent. I love MOR Neroli Clementine Lotion. The scent is light and juicy with just enough of a floral note to keep you from smelling like the produce department.
3) Another power powder, Sudzz FX Design Powder has the loveliest soapy scent. I am a scent maniac, so I use this when I want my hair to smell like a floral soap.
4) Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine. I have read the packaging over and over again trying to get a quick description of what this is and even they have trouble putting it into words. Brilliantine is a hair cream with slight hold that gives a really lovely lived-in look with a semi-matte finish (your hair won't look gelled). I use this for almost every wedding I shoot. I mix this with got2b POWDER'ful (1) and it gives my hair just enough resilience to stay where I want it to stay, out of my face and in my braid or finger waves.
5) Would you believe that the number one skin irritant is fragrance? This makes me wonder why so many facial lotions have scent added. Under the hot sun my skin can turn into a sad, desert-like frontier. I need lotion like I need water. I love this light-weight, fragrance free lotion by doTerra. Finding the perfect lotion is almost as hard as finding love but don't give up...it's possible!
6) This toothpaste is a delight! Good oral hygiene is essential when working very closely with people or having intimate conversations by the water cooler during break time. This toothpaste by doTerra has grade A essential oils that leave your breath reminding people of those clove-punctured oranges that we all made during Renaissance week in middle school. The essential oils also clean your toothbrush. It's a win-win.
If you try one of these products make it the Schwarzkopf powder. You will not be disappointed! Have any favorite products of your own? Do share and leave a comment!
